The standard AS3959 outlines different construction practises and building materials for five bushfire hazard levels. These are known as BALs (Bushfire Attack Levels).

BAL 19 Moderate Increased level of ember attack & burning debris, radiant heat up to 19kwm squared
BAL 29 High Greater risk from airborne burning debris, further risk from radiant heat exposure up to 29kwm squared
BAL 40 Very High Burning debris ignited by windborne embers & radiant heat exposure up to 40kwm squared
BAL FZ Flame Zone Direct flame contact from fire front & radiant heat exposure greater than 40kwm squared
